Center for Maternal, Fetal and Neonatal Medicine

Chairman Fusanori Yotsumoto M.D.,Ph.D.

The General Perinatal Medical Center is a project that has been established in each prefecture as one of the measures against the declining birthrate taken by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Its purpose is to improve perinatal care and to promote a better environment for bearing and raising children. On the 1st of December 1998, Fukuoka University Hospital was designated as a General Perinatal Medical Center by the government and has been playing a significant role as the center of the project for improving perinatal care in Fukuoka prefecture ever since. There are three main units in our facility: obstetrics, neonatal medicine, and neonatal surgery. These three units work together as a team and also cooperate with other departments in order to treat patients effectively. In addition, we run workshops that involve perinatal care in Fukuoka, analyzing the medical statistics of other perinatal facilities.
We as a team provide a high standard of practice and care. We have 9 beds in the MFICU (Maternal and Fetal Intensive Care Unit) and 16 backup beds in the obstetrics unit. In our neonatal unit we have 24 beds in the NICU and 16 backup beds. This makes us one of the largest General Perinatal Medical Centers in western Japan. The obstetrics unit maintains the highest standards in treating maternal illnesses such as premature birth, gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes and fetal diseases such as fetal hypoplasia. With our anesthesiologists, we perform emergency cesarean sections in the delivery room to ensure patient safety. The neonate unit not only treats and manages the growth of extremely low birth weight infants and manages neonatal medicine, but also manage surgical cases with other departments such as pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and heart surgery.

To utilize perinatal facilities more effectively in Fukuoka, we carry out twice a week a survey on how many beds are available in the area and send that information to neonatal facilities and other medical facilities. In addition, we manage the perinatal medicine database for Fukuoka.
