Emergency Medical Care Center

The Emergency Room (ER) is an emergency treatment room that is open 24/7 throughout the year, providing both primary and secondary emergency care. At Fukuoka University Hospital, the ER has been mainly operated by the General Medicine Department since 2016, but since 2024, more departments have been involved in on-call shifts. In view of the growing size of our organization, it was decided to open the Emergency Treatment Center (ER center) on April 1, 2024.
The ER center primarily treats emergency patients with mild to moderate injuries but also actively accepts patients transported by ambulance. Combined with our hospital's Emergency and Critical Care Center that handles tertiary emergencies (serious, life-threatening symptoms), both centers can handle cases ranging from primary to tertiary emergencies. Patients transported by ambulance during the day are treated by the General Medicine Department, while at night and on holidays, many departments take turns to provide medical care.
The examination room is shared with the first treatment room of the Emergency and Critical Care Center on the first floor of the main building. In the event that a patient's condition becomes critical, we can immediately contact a doctor at the Emergency and Critical Care Center. For the treatment of patients with mild symptoms, we may use the outpatient examination room of the adjacent General Medicine Department. Additionally, each medical department can also provide emergency care for their regular patients who come in at night or on holidays within the ER center. The examination rooms are spacious, making it an ideal environment for training students and residents.
Recently, the number of emergency transports in Fukuoka City has been steadily increasing, exceeding 100,000 cases last year. As a result, the number of cases where transportation is difficult has increased significantly, making addressing this issue an urgent task. We hope that our ER center can be of service to emergency medical care in the local community. Furthermore, we believe it is our mission to train as many residents capable of providing emergency care as possible. There are still many challenges ahead, but with the appointment of a full-time center director and staff in 2025, we expect that the center will continue to develop.
